Panasonic Unveils Innovative CD-ROM and Video Products

June 25th, 2007

Panasonic is making meaty multimedia product announcements
at Comdex this week. Leading the pack, the company’s Big 5 10X CD-ROM
changer ships immediately for a $249 street price. You won’t find a
similar product for less. Even better, the accompanying Windows 95
software makes it easy to switch between five CD-ROMs. Previously,
Panasonic’s fastest CD-ROM changer was only 4X speed.

Panasonic’s new PM-A110 color video camera, shipping in January for $199,
is an analog camera notable for its small size: The camera measures about
four by three inches, and less than two inches thick. It’s designed to
sit atop your monitor for videoconferencing and capturing still images.
The company also showed us a prototype of an even smaller video camera
that is egg-sized. Look for it in May.

In the printer arena, Panasonic will ship the KX-P8475 color laser in
December. This 1200 dpi device prints at 14 pages per minute for text,
5ppm for color. It’s expected to sell for $5800 to $6000, which is a
competitive but not groundbreaking price. The company is working on the
KX-PS8000, an enhanced model that also scans and copies; it’s expected to
ship in May for around $10,000. Color laser printers have met with
limited success to date, but we expect to see even lower-priced products
from several vendors this spring.
